Golden Giraffe Drive-Thru

The Golden Giraffe Event Awards celebrate the creativity, effectiveness, and ingenuity of the Dutch events industry. Due to the coronavirus, there will be no lavish award show this year, but rather a COVID-safe concept. This serves as a vital source of support for everyone who continues to believe in the power of live communication, both in person and online. Together with Eventbranche.nl, XSAGA, and many other partners, we explored what was still possible. The result? A festive Golden Giraffe Drive-Thru where the nominees were announced.

About the Golden Giraffe

The Golden Giraffe Event Awards recognize brands, organizations, and companies that make an impact through live communication—those that dare to market themselves through immersive experiences and live moments. The best events in the Netherlands are honored across six categories.

The Power of Live

On April 20 and 21, 70 submitted cases were pitched online to the Golden Giraffe jury. These included both in-person and online events from 2019 and 2020. Ultimately, one thing matters most: what added value did the event bring to the client company? A week later, all contenders were invited to gather at the Golden Giraffe Drive-Thru, with a maximum of two participants per car. This way, everyone was together, yet still in their own bubble and at a safe distance from one another. During seven pit stops, the nominees were surprised, amazed, and astonished. Above all, they received the answer to that one burning question: are we a finalist?

An unforgettable ride

After registering, the participants drove onto the grounds:

  1. Station 1 – The Test Street: Men and women in white suits kept a close eye on everything and announced the finalists in the Fire Events category.
  2. Stop 2 – The Car Wash: Here came the long-awaited announcement for the Trade Show category. Meanwhile, all the cars were thoroughly scrubbed and rinsed clean.
  3. Stop 3 – In-House Events & Team Building: A true spectacle featuring an acrobatic/dance performance with animal costumes in a circus-style show.
  4. Stop 4 – The Theater: You drove your car inside, where two ushers escorted you to a small theater. There, Hans Klok performed a magic trick right at your car window, followed by the announcement of the Relationship & Community Events category.
  5. Stop 5 – Carnival: With the stunning Brazilian dancers, you’ll almost forget to check out the nominees in the Knowledge Events and Conferences category.
  6. Stop 6 – Food: Just before the last stop, guests were offered a hamburger.
  7. Stop 7 – All You Need is Love: Guests proceeded to the All You Need is Love caravan. There, Sjoerd Weikamp was waiting to get down on one knee for each entry. Every entry received a personal tribute in verse, a rose, and a token of love. Finally, the finalists in the PR & Media Value category were announced here.

"Announcing the nominees, showcasing the best events in the Netherlands on stage, and celebrating the industry—that’s what the Golden Giraffe Event Awards are all about. But: that’s completely incompatible with a pandemic. Until, as an organizer, you team up again with loyal partners like DeFabrique. Together with the agency XSAGA, we know DeFabrique from previous collaborations, but the fact that we were able to achieve such a positive impact despite all the COVID-19 restrictions... it says so much about the venue, the people, and above all, the expertise to really pull something off!"

"This proves that, despite all the restrictions, there’s still a lot we can achieve! Together with all our partners and suppliers, we came up with and developed a wonderful concept in a very short time. The crew members managed to put on 70 shows with total dedication and enthusiasm. This production once again demonstrated just how many creative, flexible, and enthusiastic people work in our industry."
